About KND Learning

Helping everyone build strong reading and math foundations.

I believe that reading and math skills are the foundational building blocks behind all academics. And that the lack of mastery in these skills is often the reason behind most learning struggles in K12. KND Learning is about making high quality, low cost tools that aid learners in learning and mastering these skills.

Who Am I

Hi, my name is Neesha Desai. I have been working/playing around with creating EdTech games and tools for well over a decade focused on math, programming, reading and writing. Many of my first attempts were created specifically for my nieces and nephews, as I saw and identified various needs as they've made their way through school. My first real venture into the world of start ups was with Alieo Games, a company I co-founded while finishing my PhD, where we created a writing game for grades 3 to 8. We rose quickly, and just as quickly imploded, but it was a huge learning experience.

Following that, I've worked with Shoelace Learning (originally Eyeread) on designing an early reading game for PreK to Grade 2 students called Squiggle Park. I was involved in all aspects, from researching and creating the curriculum, to designing each world and level and the content. Squiggle Park was eventually sold to DreamBox, and then onto Discovery. I then continued work with Shoelace on their reading comprehension games - Dreamscape and Dreamseeker Drift - again working on everything from game design, researching developing curriculum, data analysis, and the learning engine that supports it all.

I love learning and technology and edtech has allowed me to combine the two, finding ways to use tech to make learning more accessible.

How It Works

Many learning struggles can be directly tied back to missing/incomplete foundational skills. Mastering these skills is key to success. Here at KND Learning, the goal is to provide a way for people to test their own skills, and then work their way to mastery.

There are two key areas that are focused on - Math and Reading.

Math

For Math, the main focus is basic manipulation of numbers. This includes being able to quickly perform single digit addition and subtraction, memorizing the 12 times tables and the corresponding division.

Reading

For reading, there are two paths presented. One is a built curriculum around decoding, starting from the very beginning (and with the assumption that letter idenfication has already been mastered), and the second are timed exercises focused on quick identification of high frequency words to reduce the cognitive load when reading.
